Drains

If you’ve ever had a clogged drain, you know how frustrating it can be. Clogged drains are an unwelcome nuisance, from a slow-moving shower drain to an overflowing kitchen sink. As it continues, it becomes a headache for you.

But don’t worry since clearing the clogged drain is easier than you think. Once you read our guidelines on how to clear clogged drains, you should fix them in no time. You may follow these tricks and tips for unclogging drains without calling a plumber. And it will save you hundreds of bucks and bring enjoyment.

How To Clear A Clogged Drain:

Are you frustrated with water backing up in your sink? Do you see water not draining through the bathtub? Well, all these happen mainly for a clogged drain. If you’ve got a sink or shower drain that’s been blocked up, it’s time to take action.

Luckily, there are a few simple methods that you can use to clear clogged drains quickly and easily.

Using a Toilet Plunger to Clear Clogged Drains

First of all, try the old-fashioned plunger. A toilet plunger is one of the most useful tools for quickly unclogging drains. If the clog is close enough to the opening, you can fit a plunger over it. Then, the classic tool can be highly effective in dislodging anything causing the blockage.

You may need to add water to the sink for the plunger to have any impact. For it, you must pump vigorously and see if it can break up the clog. Mostly, it should get your water running again.

  • To use a toilet plunger, start filling the sink or tub with about an inch of water. This will create a seal against the bottom of the plunger. The seal makes the plunger more effective at clearing out the blockage.
  • Once fully submerged in the plunger, move it up and down several times. You need to put mild pressure on maneuvering the plunger.
  • You should feel some pushback once the clog is loosened and ready for removal.

Before removing any debris, you’ll need to remove any excess water from the sink or tub. Or, the debris may pop out, causing more problems.

Use of boiled water:

Next, consider pouring some boiling water down the drain. This method is advantageous when dealing grease or soap scum stuck in the pipe. The hot water will help to dissolve some of these materials. Thus, it should ease the blockage. However, be sure to pour only a little-boiling water all at a time. Or else, too much hot water could cause further damage, particularly with plastic pipes. Also, sometimes, you need to run the hot water multiple times to unclog the drainage.

Apply baking soda and vinegar:

Using baking soda and vinegar solution to unclog drains is an age-old method. It’s more effective than using hot water only. All you need is to mix one part baking soda with two parts of vinegar. Their chemical reaction will loosen the soapy and greasy residue.

After that, you may pour in hot water for further effectiveness. This solution works best with kitchen and bathroom sinks where soap and grease are likely to clog the drain.

Use of an auger:

Sometimes the clog can be too deep or hard to dissolve with vinegar and baking soda. So, what do you do at that point? Investing in a drain snake or auger will be the best idea.

These tools will be your best friends to clear deep clogs that the plunger won’t reach. First, feed the plumbing snake into the drain until it hits resistance. This resistance is likely your clog! Once you reach it, continue feeding until the clog breaks up. Once the blockage breaks apart, it should wash away with sink or tub water.

Also, for stubborn debris in the P-trap, you should reach for a tool like an adjustable wrench or pliers. You need to remove the screws and pry off the P-trap. After that, with the auger or plunger, remove the blocks inside it.

Hiring a Plumber for More Difficult Clogs

If nothing else has worked, it might be time to call a plumber. Hiring a professional will help get rid of those tough clogs quickly. Plus, ensure that the unclogging job is done correctly.

Here are some tips for hiring the right plumber for the job:

  • Research local plumbers and read reviews to find one you can trust. You may Ask friends or family members for referrals. Their reference may help you find the right plumber quickly.
  • Always ensure that the plumber is licensed and insured. The licensure indicates their professionalism and expertise.
  • When hiring the plumber, describe the clogging problem in detail. It will help you finalize the pricing for better understanding.

Conclusion

Unclogging your drains can seem like a daunting task. Nonetheless, with the correct information and the right tools, it doesn’t need to be so intimidating. We understand that beats the satisfaction of tackling a clog on your own. So, if you find yourself with a stubborn clogged drain, don’t panic.
